36 hours of family travel in Victoria, BC, Canada – Our 1ST COUNTRY TOGETHER as a traveling family! [Video]

Sometimes you dive in to new experiences for your family. But sometimes you wade. When we got an opportunity to overnight in Victoria, BC, we jumped at it. (Actually, we sailed toward it, on an incredible 3-hour ferry ride from Seattle.)If our world travels were a book, our 36 hours in Canada were like a prologue. But it gave us something important: The first country all 4 of us traveled to together as a family… along with some big memories, and determination to return for a much longer trip. Here’s to finding everyday adventure wherever you are!All the best,Learners and MakersINSTAGRAM : https://www.instagram.com/learnersandmakers/MORE TRAVEL TIPS & FAMILY ADVENTURES: https://learnersandmakers.com/Subscribe to see future videos. ❤️Music from Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/paul-yudin/big-adventureLicense code: S2JUEN9KNIL8KTBA#travelfulltime #travelfamily #digitalnomadfamily

Machu Piccu and Lake Titicaca – Watkins Family [Video]

A Family Travel JourneyMachu Picchu and Lake TiticacaThe main attraction of the trip with my family was visiting Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is an ancient Inka Citadel built in the 1400s. It gained international attention in 1911 when explorer Hiram Bingham discovered the city.We arrived a day early at Machu Picchu because of transportation strike scheduled for two days. There were no buses, taxis, or trains running during the strike. Strikers were protesting the rising gas and food prices. The people of Peru work very hard and cannot afford to feed their families. Striking during the Easter holiday with a record number of tourists is a way to get the government’s attention. Many tourists could not get to a Machu Picchu for their tours because of the strike. We took the Peru Rail train ride from Ollantaytambo through the Andes Mountains. The train ride is about an hour and a half. During Covid, there is no food service on the train, and masks were required.Rolling into Machu Picchu between steep, untouched mountains on the train is magical. The small town of Aguas Calientes is a hidden gem tucked into the mountains.Michael, Jonathan, and Emily went back a second day to hike Huayna Picchu. There are very steep and narrow parts of the hike. It took them about 3 hours to hike it. Lucas, Henry, and I stayed back at the hotel with Milo, my dad, and Kay.We waited around the hotel for a couple of hours to hear if the trains would run at all. We were told they would not so we checked back into our hotel rooms for an extra night in Aguas Calientes. About 30- minutes after we checked in, our guide, Pedro came to our hotel and told us evacuation trains were running that night to get guests back to Ollantaytambo. We grabbed our bags and went to the train station. We waited for an hour and thirty minutes to board a train back to Ollantaytambo. We were given priority because of Milo and my dad, and Kay. The train left at 9 pm. We arrived in Ollantaytambo at about 11 pm and had another two-hour ride to our hotel in Cusco. We checked into our Cusco hotel at 1 am. Milo was wide awake. We got 4 hours of sleep before we had to board another bus to Puno. Our first stop was on the floating island of Uruo. There are hundreds of floating islands in Lake Titicaca that are inhabited. The people on the island fish, hunt and make most of their money through tourism. The island we stopped on had six families living on it. We were greeted by the president of the island. A president is elected once a year. The president, Jesus, gave a presentation about how the island is constructed &how they maintain it. The island floats on the roots of reeds. Dried reeds are layered on top of the roots as a floor. Reeds must be added to the floor every couple of weeks. We learned about how they cook. We got to see inside their homes and try on traditional clothing. There are schools on some of the islands, but many children go to school on the mainland in Puno. The islands do have electricity generated from solar panels. Our next stop was an hour and forty-minute boat ride to Taquile island. Our guide is from Amantani Island, across from Taquile. Taquile has 2,700 inhabitants. The president of this island greeted us when we came to the island. That is one of his jobs. The president is elected once a year at a meeting. He is not paid for the job. Most islanders have to make the hike up to the top of the island with heavy loads on their backs. Our guide told us about the traditions of the island. The people on Taquile speak Quechua &wear traditional clothing. Five different hats are worn by the men to represent their status:The president wears two hats (Presidents’ sons wear a special hat too, even if they are not married).Past presidents wear a unique hat.Married men have a hat.Single boys looking for a match wear a specific type of hat (the tighter the weaving, the more it stands up and the better his prospects). There are hats for young boys and girls.Women cut their hair twice in their lives. The first time is to provide hair for her husband to weave into his belt. The second time is to make extensions that the husband wears during celebrations and important ceremonies. We saw and participated in a traditional dance show. We ate a delicious lunch overlooking the lake. We also saw demonstrations of how they make shampoo and soap from plants & how they weave. We took a nice walk along the island &saw sheep and families. It was a lovely day, & we are honored to get a glimpse into the lives of these islanders. The next day we said goodbye to my dad, Kay, my sister, &her family. It was a busy & exciting eight days. They flew to Lima for one day before heading home. We got organized &headed to the border & Bolivia!www.gowatkinsgo.com

Exploring Marrakesh | Our Moroccan Holiday [Video]

We have a tour of the medina in Marrakesh, seeing the Ben Youssef Arabic school then a tour of a Riad museum, followed by shopping in the medina and a horse and cart rideAbout us:We’re a family of five, based in South Wales, UK. Olivia is 8 years old and Molly is 6 and they attend a Welsh medium primary school. Maia is our new addition and was born in October 2021. Olivia is kind and nicknamed the Professor for her love of animals and the facts she frequently teaches us. Molly is sassy and full of mischief. Maia mostly sleeps and feeds!! Abby was a full time working doctor, but currently on maternity leave, and Richard is home-working as a civil servant (and a little camera shy!). We started this channel because Olivia and Molly were desparate to have their own, after months of nagging, Abby caved in when she saw the girls tiding ready for a pretend video. It’s evolved from mum filming some baking in the kitchen to a family vlog with challenges and family friendly content – I’m afraid you won’t find any insta-perfect content with us, just real, authentic family fun. Vlogging gives us an outlet to the world. COVID had changed our social lives so this is a way to share our lives with others via our channel when we can’t do this in person. We want to entertain, to teach and to show that perfection is totally overrated and it’s best to be true to yourselves. Our rules for our videos is modesty for the girls, we won’t post anything we feel that they may be unhappy with in the future, such as fighting and struggling with their emotions (same for parents too!). We’ll post only the imperfect postives of our lives to share with you. This doesn’t mean that the tough times don’t happen, just that we keep it private. We like doing family friendly challenges, exploring the world, attempting to bake (we have a lot to learn!), playing and having fun. Watkins Family – Worldschooling in Ecuador [Video]

GOWATKINSGO – A Family Travel Journey On the beach in San Jose, Ecuador with ten other families was one of the best times we have had traveling. It was not what we expected, but it was magical. We booked the trip through a company that over-promised, under-delivered. Luckily, the groups of families attending the meetup are amazing. All the families stepped up to create a fun and engaging worldschooling program. It was more work than any of us anticipated, but maybe that made it more fulfilling. We made friendships that will last. Our friend Tonja took charge and created round table discussions for adults and kids. Other parents organized soccer games on the nearby soccer field with local kids. Michael bought a slip and slide. We also helped each other figure out meals, laundry, taxis, shopping, etc. we all bonded during the month. The brochure for this meetup looked better than what we received. There was no communication leading up to the meetup. Michael created a survey for the families to fill out to get to know each other before arriving. There was no formal welcome. We were promised good internet and working space for parents. There was no dedicated working space. Many of us had to buy Claro cards because the internet could barely support web surfing. The internet was not adequate for working, and most families work while traveling. One of our hosts also gave us trouble about using the communal kitchen promised to us in the advertisement for the trip. She wanted it only open between certain hours in the day. It made it stressful for parents to make sure they could feed their kids when they were hungry. Our hosts did not understand that worldschoolers cannot afford and do not want to eat every meal at a restaurant. Two weeks into the trip one of the host families left without saying a word. They packed up their bags and drove away. We later got a Facebook messenger communication stating the reasons for their leaving, but it could have been handled better. We never heard from them again. The hosts tried to tell us we owed more money to pay a service charge included in the contract with the hotel. We already paid it in our fee for the trip. When we confronted them about it, they lied straight to our faces. It is bizarre how poorly this trip was thrown together. The company that created the worldschool meetup did arrange Spanish classes, surf lessons, and some cultural activities. The chaos surrounding those activities was annoying. Schedules changed without notice, no details were given about immersion activities until they were happening. We had to book Lucas and Henry’s surf lesson for the first two weeks because of a lack of communication. The saving grace for what was planned is that the teachers and presenters for those activities were great. Our Spanish teachers from Outdoor Ecuador Spanish and Surf School kept classes fun and interesting. The surf instructions are great with kids. The hosteria staff is kind and hardworking. The manager, Morena, always had a smile on her face. We are thankful for their hard work to make our stay memorable. One day a local craftsman showed the group how to make Tagua necklaces. Tagua is a nut from a palm tree. The kids learned how to sand, buff, polish and etch the nut. Lucas and Henry have cool necklaces from that demonstration. The other cultural immersion activities were weaving, music and cooking. Other than those activities, we barely saw the hosts. They made little effort to hang out with us or help us plan anything else (there was a lot of downtime). When we voiced our concerns, our hosts became defensive and told us we should be grateful for what they were doing. The company should not bill themselves as worldschooling trip organizers. They do not know the first thing about what a worldschooler is or what worldschoolers expect out of their travels. I hope they will learn from their failure, but I doubt they will. WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TOCANTO COMPANY.Sometimes things don’t work out the way you thought they would. Our time on the beach in Ecuador was not how we envisioned it. It ended up being phenomenal because of the families that attended. We made strong bonds with them, and we already have plans to see many of them again. We also fell in love with another dog. He showed up one day out of the blue, and he was blue, so we called him Blueberry. All of the families adopted him for the month. He ended up getting adopted by an Ecuadorian family at the end of our stay. We will always remember our pal Blueberry. We will be hesitant about signing up for any other worldschool events, but we are excited to try to make our own, more informal worldschool meetups happen. Our experience at this meetup has energized us about the possibilities ahead of us on our world schooling journey. www.gowatkinsgo.com
