In April 2021, nine days of heavy rains devastated one cocoa-growing community in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Sadly, extreme weather events like this are a constant threat for millions of smallholder cocoa farmers across the entire country. The cause: climate change. That’s why the Rainforest Alliance works to help local farmers embrace climate-smart growing techniques designed to help farmers adapt to and prepare for common climate threats—from unpredictable weather patterns to outbreaks of crop pests and disease. This urgent work is part of our wider TRACTIONS project (“Transforming the Cocoa Sector in Indonesia through Value Addition for Smallholders”) which aims to help 3,400 cocoa farmers build stronger livelihoods in seven districts across the country. TRACTIONS is funded by The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and is implemented by a consortium comprising the Rainforest Alliance, Valrhona, Kalimajari, the Agriculture Office of Jembrana, Rikolto, and RVO.
