Bill welcomes author Robert McKean to the show. Populating ROBERT MCKEAN’S novels and stories are some five hundred characters, steelworkers and bankers, doctors and jewelers, teachers and librarians, lawyers and yardage clerks, salesmen and ballet instructors—all residents of Ganaego, a small mill town in Western Pennsylvania. McKean’s short story collection I’ll Be Here for You: Diary of a Town was awarded first-prize in the Tartts First Fiction competition (Livingston Press). His novel The Catalog of Crooked Thoughts was awarded first-prize in the Methodist University Longleaf Press Novel Contest. The novel was also named a Finalist for the 2018 Eric Hoffer Award. Mending What is Broken, his latest novel, is just out from Livingston Press. Recipient of a Massachusetts Artist’s Grant for his fiction, McKean has had six stories nominated for Pushcart Prizes and one story for Best of the Net. He has published extensively in journals such as The Kenyon Review, The Chicago Review, and Armchair/Shotgun.

Aaron Poochigian earned a PhD in Classics from the University of Minnesota and an MFA in Poetry from Columbia University. His thriller in verse, Mr. Either/Or, was released by Etruscan Press in the fall of 2017, and the sequel, Mr. Either/Or: All the Rage, is out this June. A recipient of an NEA Grant in translation, he has published translations with Penguin Classics and W. W. Norton. His latest collection of poetry, American Divine, the winner of the Richard Wilbur Award, came out in 2021. His other poetry collections are Manhattanite (Able Muse Press, 2017), winner of the 2016 Able Muse Book Award, and The Cosmic Purr (Able Muse Press, 2012). Her interdisciplinary research in voice studies involves collaborators in neurobiology, computer science, linguistics, interface design, data visualization and statistics. She has worked with Interdisciplinary Research Support in the Office of Research at UC Davis to develop templates for NSF and USDA grants, and has written and co-written a number of successful federal, state and privately funded grant and fellowship proposals. She is a co-investigator on “The Spoken Web,” a seven-year Can$2.5 million SHHRC partnership grant project that involves 13 institutions in the U.S. and Canada (2018-2025). In 2018 and 2019, Marit co-directed a NEH Digital Humanities Advancement grant project, Tools for Listening to Texts-in-Performance. In 2015-16, Marit was an ACLS Digital Innovations Fellow at UC Davis, affiliated with the ModLab and the Davis Humanities Institute. She taught writing and literature at CSU Bakersfield for 10 years after earning her PhD at UC Davis in 2005.
