Meet Nelson—barber, survivor, refugee [Video]

In 2013 Nelson fled his home in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the safety of Kampala, but has faced numerous challenges in his search for “financial health” and stability. Through the FIND program he was paired with mentor Nabaasa Allen, owner of New Star Salon, who is sharing skills to enable him to expand his barber shop into a unisex salon. One of the biggest challenges facing refugees and migrants is navigating the livelihoods and financial landscape of a camp or city after they arrive in a host or transit country. The IRC and partner Tufts University launched the FIND research project in April 2019. After studying the financial lives of displaced populations, the IRC has designed a client-response program to meet the specific needs of refugees in Yumbe and Kampala. The International Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future.LEARN MOREhttps://www.Rescue.org/https://twitter.com/RESCUEorg/https://www.facebook.com/InternationalRescueCommittee/https://www.instagram.com/RESCUEorg/

Volunteering For Charitable Organization [Video]

Volunteering for a charitable organization is an excellent way to make a difference in the world. It can help impoverished nations escape oppressive regimes or provide aid to patients suffering from debilitating diseases. BenefitsVolunteering for a charitable organization is a great way to meet new people and develop professional networks. It’s especially beneficial if you volunteer with the same organization on a regular basis. You’ll develop lasting relationships that will last for years. In addition, it will help you learn more about yourself.Nonprofits rely heavily on volunteers. Without their help, they would be unable to sustain their programs. Additionally, nonprofits often don’t have enough full-time staff to offer all the services they need to succeed. Volunteering for a charity is also great for your health. You’ll feel better about yourself and your community. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to help a cause that’s close to your heart. You can help animals in need or people with diseases like cancer. CostsIf you are considering volunteering for a charitable organization, you should consider the costs involved. These can include out-of-town volunteer travel, food, lodging, and other expenses. Out-of-town volunteer travel may also include air, bus, or rail transportation.Charitable organizations should have policies and practices for managing their volunteers. Volunteers who feel appreciated and valued are more likely to stay with a nonprofit organization. Charities that invest in volunteer management also enjoy the highest volunteer retention rates. A recent study found that charities that put volunteers’ needs first reaped the highest rates of volunteer retention. If you use your own car for volunteer work, you may be able to deduct transportation expenses as long as they are directly related to the volunteer work. However, if the mileage is mostly for personal pleasure, the expense may not be deductible. Another type of expense to consider is uniforms. Whether you volunteer for a charity that provides medical care, or you help the Red Cross maintain its facilities, you can deduct the cost of the uniforms.Millennials most likely to volunteerWhile older generations may be more inclined to volunteer for charitable organizations, millennials are more likely to give their time because they’re more engaged in social issues and aspire to do something good in their communities. A Pew Research Center survey found that millennials were the most optimistic generation. They spend more money on sustainable products and support one-for-one organizations that provide donations to underprivileged individuals. In addition, millennials are more likely to donate to environmental and health issues than previous generations, and millennials are especially generous when it comes to charitable work.Volunteering has a number of benefits for individuals. It can improve one’s health and improve their overall quality of life. The study also revealed that people who give to charity regularly are healthier than those who don’t. Volunteering can also boost leadership skills. In fact, 92% of human resources executives believe that volunteering is beneficial to the development of leadership skills.Impact on communityVolunteering for charitable organizations has a wide-ranging impact on society. In the United States, it is one of the most common forms of civic participation. In fact, volunteerism dates back to the founding of the nation, when Benjamin Franklin founded the first volunteer fire department. More recently, the social reform movement has mobilized a new generation of civic-minded individuals. Concerns such as temperance, women’s rights, and the abolition of slavery have spurred the rise of nonprofit organizations that help improve communities. Volunteering is a great way to help others, improve your health, and learn a new skill.Volunteers help nonprofits deliver vital services to communities. They lend their expertise to nonprofit boards, help with fundraising campaigns, assist with special events, and work in customer service roles. According to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Labor, Americans who volunteer over 100 hours per year are healthier than those who do not. Meanwhile, according to AmeriCorps, more than one-third of millennials, thirty-five percent of Baby Boomers, and 24 percent of the Silent Generation Americans are active in community organizations.-Subscribe to my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyZM5OfBIKJh4vuerwt0sLgFollow me on social media: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lacey-flanagan-25376b101/https://twitter.com/a2jh3a3_qhttps://www.pinterest.com/laceyflanaganme/_saved/https://soundcloud.com/laceyflanaganmainehttps://www.behance.net/laceyflanaganmaine To learn more: https://laceyflanagan.co/
